A brief history of keys

unlocking front door

The key and lock have been around since antiquity with the earliest known example excavated from the ruins of Nineveh, the capital of ancient Assyria, in modern day Iraq! The first locksmiths seem to have appeared around 5000 years ago, before then you were stuck with a plank of wood plopped snugly on the inside of the door, restricting access and usually guarded by another person.

Later there is evidence that the Ancient Egyptians had widespread use of the pin lock which was actually made of wood, the design was later perfected in ancient Greece with the appearance of bronze keys which were used to lock Sacred Temples. Add in a dash of Roman ingenuity and you have what almost looks like a lock and key system like we have today.
